G.K Gupta Dedicated His Life To Serve The Abandoned Elderly

From 21 years, Abhinav Samaj has been working towards the welfare of the elderly who have been abandoned by their own families. They find solace knowing that no one is going to harm them or leave them on the roads to fend for themselves.

At Abhinav Sewa Sadan, an old age home by Abhinav Samaj, over twenty-five elderly residents, all above 60 years of age, are provided with more than just free shelter, meals and care. They find compassion, conversation, and the dignity of being seen.

An Incident That Shaped The Old Age Home 

“In 2004, I was working at the Registrar’s Office in Pitampura, Delhi, when a 72-year-old woman came with her son to sell her house. I registered her property documents as part of my duty. That very evening, the same woman returned, crying uncontrollably. Her son had taken the money, left her in a taxi outside the airport, and flown to the U.S. She was a homeowner in the morning, and homeless by night,” - G .K. Gupta

The story made headlines across major media outlets at the time, but for G.K. Gupta, it was more than just news. For him, it became a turning point.

“I couldn’t forget her face. That day, I felt something inside me change. I knew I had to do something for people like her, who are left behind by the very families they built their lives around. So, we created a home, a family, that won’t turn its back.” - G.K. Gupta, founder

Where Every Story Hurts, But Every Heart Heals

There is a man who spent his youth working away from home, sending every rupee home to build a better life for his family. When he finally returned, hoping to spend his last years with them, he was met with threats and violence.

“My daughter and daughter-in-law told me they’d file a false case if I didn’t leave. They used to beat me and then, they threw me out…my own blood.”- he says

Another resident, a frail woman in her seventies, was forced to pay rent to live in her own house. She was not given food and was made to work beyond her limits. When her daughter took all her money, she was thrown out.
